I manage inverter procurement for a 40-person solar installation company. So why do so many people pick the wrong one? Because they compare the wrong number. The number on the price tag.
In Q2 2024, we compared two bids for a 22kW commercial rooftop job. One vendor offered a budget inverter at a price that looked 15% lower than the Growatt option. My first reaction was to take the savings. Then I looked past the sticker price. Shipping was extra. Commissioning wasn’t included. The monitoring platform required an annual subscription. The lower headline number was actually the more expensive decision.
Add one service call at $150 and a day of lost production, and the gap gets bigger. Simple.
The Short Version: What I Tell Installers and Buyers
I’m not going to tell you that Growatt is always the answer. No inverter is perfect for every site. But I will tell you to stop comparing the number at the top of the quote.
Do this instead:
First, get the complete landed cost. Ask for shipping, hardware included, monitoring, and setup support. Second, ask about failure. What happens if it breaks? Who answers the phone? How long does a warranty replacement take? Third, test the app before you commit. If you can’t pair the inverter to your phone in the showroom, you won’t be able to help a customer at 6pm on Sunday. Fourth, check compatibility early. For a standard grid-tie system, that’s relatively simple. For batteries or a generator-based setup — like a Patriot solar generator — it takes real research.
And if you’re looking at a Predator generator inverter, take the same approach. The product may be portable, but your money isn’t. Count the whole cost.
