Growatt Inverter Installation Checklist: Error Codes, Continuity Checks, and Backup Power

Who This Checklist Is For

This is for anyone installing a Growatt inverter for residential, off-grid, or small commercial projects. It's also for the person who has to pay for the rework. That's me. Step 3: How to Check for Continuity with a Multimeter

  1. Isolate the PV circuit from the inverter. Open the DC disconnect and keep the inverter off.

  4. Place one probe on the PV positive wire and the other on PV negative. There should be no tone. A beep means a short or a reversed connection.

If you get a beep on the PV pair, stop and trace the conduit. I've seen an installer replace a perfectly good inverter because the short was in a damaged connector.

Step 4: Wire the AC Side to Code

For grid-tied systems, the AC connection needs to meet the National Electrical Code (NEC) Articles 690 and 705, plus the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). As of January 2025, most U.S. utilities also require inverters to comply with UL 1741 and IEEE 1547. This is not a suggestion; it's the difference between an inspection pass and a costly rework order.

Use a properly sized AC breaker and torque the lugs to spec. Loose terminals cause a significant portion of the inverter error calls I've seen.

Checkpoint: AC wires are torqued to the values in the manual, the grounding conductor is continuous, and the neutral bond matches the service type.

People think the generator is the problem when the inverter refuses to accept it. The inverter is rejecting unstable power.

If you're connecting a generator to a Growatt hybrid inverter:

  • Use a generator with clean, stable output. A 2500 watt dual fuel generator with inverter-style output is better than a larger, less stable construction-site unit.
  • Size the generator to handle inrush current. 2,500 watts is enough to charge batteries at a moderate rate, not enough to run central air conditioning.
  • Never run a generator and a grid-tied inverter into the same breaker without a transfer switch or interlock.

And when you market backup power, avoid saying this generator powers your entire home. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advertising guidelines require claims that can be substantiated. Running wattage is a fact, not a vibe.

Step 7: Compare Total Cost, Not Just the Inverter Price

After six years of tracking purchase orders, the most expensive part of a solar system isn't always the Growatt inverter. It's labor for rework and downtime while errors are diagnosed.

I went back and forth between two vendors on a ten-site package last year. One quoted $2,000 more up front but included an on-site commissioning checklist.
